Pattern Naming Contest

I have finally finished my second sock pattern. I love the way it turned out with the beautiful Destination Yarn. I used the America the Beautiful collection in colorway sea. Usually when I complete a pattern I know what it should be named. Not so much this time.

So I have decided to solicit your help. Leave a comment with suggestions for pattern names from today til Sunday Nov 8th. I will then pick my top 5 favorites and we will vote on a winner. The winner will receive a copy of the pattern and a skein of the gorgeous destination yarn (color tbd). So far I have one suggestion, I think it was from Annie in my knitting group, Bubble socks.

I love the color of the yarn, or at least the color I see on my monitor. I suggest "Interlochen" as a name for these beauties.

Hmmm, considering the color and the "America the Beautiful" collection it comes from as well as the undulating design I suggest you call it "From Sea to Shining Sea".

It was what I thought of IMMEDIATELY upon seeing the socks!

I think I'm too close to it. I keep thinking of sea things - Urchin or Whirlpool or Swirling Tide. It also reminds me of an Ice Molecule kindof because it's such a geometric pattern...

Anyways I posted this to twitter and later today I'll post it to my blog. Hopefully you'll get lots of responses!

my first inclination--hourglass. but it is the america the beautiful yarn...so maybe it should be a sea name?

low tide? waves?
sea snake? (who wants that on their leg?)

How about waveform? I love the pattern.

They are fabulous.

I'd name the pattern Standing Waves.

On the watery theme I like these:

Rivulets
Waterways
Rain on the WIndowpane
Waving Hello

In a non-watery theme I like

Undulations
Sinuousity
Curvy Swervy Topsy Turvy

Since you are selling the pattern, not the yarn or the color, the name should have to do with the pattern itself. I'd call it

A Ripple in Time.

The Sands of Time.

Pools.

It seems to have so much movement - I'm seeing a flag waving & whipping in the wind. Hmm... Old Glory? Patriot? I'm not usually the flag-waving sort but there you go. Good job, whatever you call it! (Do you hate "Flag Waving" and "Whipping in the Wind?")

The pattern reminds me of when we were children and would try to do figure eights skating backwacks. So my suggestion is "figure eights".

I was looking at the picture, and my daughter came to see and said, "squiggles!" so that is my suggestion!

I think Pacific for the color and "watery theme" or Chained for non-watery name. Either way, the color is gorgeous and the pattern is very cool.

I love the color of the yarn. When I look at the pattern it reminds me of interlocking chains.
I think the name should be interlocked chains.

Unchain My Heart

Very cool pattern

They remind me of BUBBLE WRAP! Pop, pop, pop.

OzKnitter said...

Beautiful!

How about "Droplets"?

Debbie said...

Beautiful!

I'll suggest "Ocean purls" or "Ocean pearls" because they remind me of the water (and scuba diving :-) and those chains could be clams with pearls inside all lined up...

"ocean pearls" also sounds nicer than "kelp bed" which is the other thing I thought they could remind me of :P

How about

Slow Flow

Rolling on the River

They reminded me waves lapping up on the beach after a boat or a jet ski go by so how about Makin' Waves

They also reminded me of the bubbles in 7 up and how they rise to the top so what about Fizzy Soda Socks?

They look like keyholes to me. Perhaps Peeking through the Keyhole? No matter what you name them, they are beautiful.

Pretty! How about "the river runs through", "waterfall", or "rapids". I don't know.

Very, very pretty pattern. I think water is the element too, so something like "withering waves" - or to connect with the literature; "wuthering waves"? No matter what, good luck with your socks :)

Can I suggest "cockle shell,"as soon as I saw these lovley socks they reminded me of when my kids were small, and we collected cockles to catch the crabs. They look like cockles.

I would suggest "Going Somewhere" because the pattern just moves across the sock and the yarn is the destination, wherever it may take you. Good luck with your selection

I would suggest "Double Dutch" because it reminds me of jumping rope when I was a kid!

It definitely reminds me of wave functions, so my suggestions are 'Sinusoidal' or 'Oscillation' or 'AC' (pun not intended, but perhaps convenient now that I think about it), or 'Whistling.'

The pattern and the yarn are both gorgeous!

Beautiful socks! This stitch pattern reminds me of genie bottles (I Dream of Jeannie). I would call it Blue Genie. I love that shade of blue. It's gorgeous!

I took physics last semester so my suggestion is "Amplitude".

"Sarasvati"
I ganked this from Wikipedia but it does a good job of summing up the water/creativity combo I going for - "As a river/water goddess, Saraswati symbolizes fertility and prosperity. She is associated with purity and creativity, especially in the context of communication, such as in literary and verbal skills. In the post-Vedic age, She began to lose her status as a river goddess and became increasingly associated with literature, arts, music, etc. Her name literally means "the one who flows", which apparently was applied to thoughts, words, or the flow of a river."

I think I might've said the pattern looks like bubbles, but I think my official contest entry would be "Sprites", because it reminds me of the bubbles from, well....Sprite! And also I think of Sprites as mischievious little creatures, darting here and there to work their mischief, and I would imagine their trail to look something like the pattern in your sock!

There are some really great names for these beautiful socks. I'd call the DNA since that's what it reminds me of.

It reminds me of one of the illusion drawings where you can see 2 different pictures depending on how you look at it, so I suggest "illusion".

Well, since the cables look like little circles or coins, I would suggest: Penny For Your Thoughts.

It reminds me of patterns I have seen in pictures of Morraco and that area of the world.
Morracan Tile or
Arabian Mosiac

It is beautiful.

Back for another try:

Fiberoptics

Eyes Wide Open

Eyes on the Prize

Elaine said...

Yikes - I just looked at them again and they reminded my of pop-tops (like on cans) all linked together - like in a necklace.

New suggestion:

Pop-Top Socks

Pop-Tom Necklace
